SYLVIE

Sylvie is the glue that holds the family together; once a role she aspired to but now a force of disillusionment with such a lack of action from Derek and no respect from Tom. She wants a new direction, but what is it? Emma tries to help her with this problem but this help usually takes the form of Ikea catalogues and trips to Habitat. Perhaps another child - but is Derek the ideal father?

Derek is bone idle but loved by the kids, that is when he isn’t winding Tom up. He likes life as it is, with a job that’s easy and a home life that’s laid back. Why does Sylvie want to change it? What is she so unhappy about? When these thoughts furrow Derek’s brow he retreats to the shed to smoke roll-ups and listen to old LPs. A can of beer or two. When life gets dull for Derek he goes up to Edinburgh to watch his beloved Hearts or organises a poker game. Like Otis, he tends to drift off into space, and like Tom he sulks. He deplores these traits in his children, and worries they won’t grow up to be like him.

The series will be episodic, with fresh challenges or obstacles facing the group each week. Whatever confronts the various family members, things are always resolved - kind of - and the slightly off-key normality is resumed. Despite the conflicts they are tied together by a genuine family bond and this is an affectionate portrait of the oddities and secrets of British family life.
