The programmes follow on from the short films DONKEY TOWN commissioned by Camilla Deakin at Channel 4 Television and EMMA 18, commissioned by the former editor, Clare Kitson. HOME, DONKEY TOWN and EMMA 18 are original stories written by Sam Morrison and the first half hour script for the series HOME has been fully funded by Channel 4. The series follows the pleasures and pressures of everyday family life in an English town. It’s a middle-class white family where the mum, Sylvie, wants to be seen as upper class and the eldest boy, Tom, would rather been seen as a gangster. The dad, Derek, has no pretensions either way and the youngest, Otis, has no concept of class but will probably oppose a class system in later life, writing a fascinating thesis on social structure at Oxford. The family are always at odds with each other and this surfaces through well observed dialogue and scenes rather than preposterous storylines. Not that the family are without moments of melodrama and buffoonery. There’s Tom’s double life of child and grown-up, Derek’s idle sarcasm, Sylvie’s neuroses and Otis, the mute witness to proceedings, and his mostly unrecognised genius for all things creative. | |||||
